Chapter 9

The Word Carries Responsibility

A Profane Word

I will never forget the story of a family who received a word from the Lord at a service we had at our church with the visiting prophet. Our services during that week were extraordinarily anointed as people were being set free by the Holy Spirit every evening. One night, the prophet was in the process of ministering to the congregation when he suddenly stopped and began to talk to a visiting family. Once he had their attention, he began to say that the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that the father had cancer. Since the family had said nothing to the prophet at all regarding their situation, they quickly realized that the Lord was ministering through him, and each of them broke into tears.

As the prophet ministered God's word to the family, God revealed an attack that Satan had brought against them. He told them that this evil would try to take the life of this husband unless it was resisted. To my remembrance, the prophecy made it clear that it was not God's will that this man die of the disease. He continued to pray over them, breaking the power of the image of death, and went on ministering.

The next day, I received a phone call from the wife of the man who had cancer, and she was insistent about speaking to the prophet. I make it a point to resist people wanting counsel from the prophet regarding the word he has spoken. Instead, I encourage them to speak to their pastor or church leaders for confirmation and counsel regarding that word. Paul said that we are to "test all things to see whether they are from God." In my opinion, that individual's pastor or church elders are best equipped to counsel and judge the word they've received. The pastor and elders know the details surrounding the life of that individual, and will be able to reveal the whole counsel of God surrounding that particular situation.

The prophet is best in delivering the word, and then the leadership that knows the person can intervene and instruct.

As I continued to dialog with the woman, she divulged to me her thoughts regarding this word from God. I must admit I thought it odd that her initial concern was not so much for her husband as it was for herself. She began to tell of a supposed visitation she received while attending a recent women's retreat. She described sitting on a stump and praying. During her silence, she said that the Lord spoke clearly to her that He was going to give her a ministry. He went on to tell her that her husband was going to become ill and die soon, and that after he was dead she would receive this ministry. Then, as a test to the word, she asked the Lord to confirm that word by letting light shine on the log across that ravine.

SURE ENOUGH, LIGHT APPEARED ON THE LOG!
